What a nice surprise to come across this URL. I was stationed at the 644th Radar Squadron at Richmond NAS, from 1961-1966. Those were the days. Now Im old and retired from any electronics activity deeper than building up PCs for fun. Beyond the 644th, I was stationed at Birkenfeld, Germany with the 615th AC&W Squadron, and the 7420th Radar Evaluation Squadron at Ramstein. From there I finished out my AF time at the Air Force Special Projects Production Facility at Westover. Life has been good with Rockwell for much of the time since.

I served as a 30554c Sgt. with the 665th Air Def Grp from 7/72 to 10/73, and the 632nd Radar Squadron from 11/73 to 10/75. I worked on the BUIC 3, the T2, and the Q47 / GPA124. I have been looking for something like this page for a long time, almost 5 of my best years were on the stations, and I was hoping someone documented them as the Air Force Historians Office does not. mm

Great finding your site. I have been loading Cape Newenham into every search I could. I was at 705th -King Salmon (56 -57), 747th - Ellington AFB, TX (57-60), and 794th - Cape Newenham (60-61). My AFSC was 362XX, Wire Maintenance. I found a couple photos on the web from a group called The Firebirds which shows the approach to the Cape Newenhams runway. I was at Cape Newenham when a C-123 committed to land but the updrafts and crosswinds were too great and he hit the saddle on his belly. Lucky it was February and he went up like a big sled. I might be crazy but I enjoyed the site duty. Thanks for your pages and I will be checking in from time to time.

MSgt/AF(Retired - 1975)I have emailed a couple of people that have left notes in this guestbook. Coming from a 3 month Basic Training stent at Lackland AFB, I was assigned to the 28th Air Division SAGE Block House at Hamilton AFB, CA. in Jan 1956. I was assigned to the Operations Section and wrote backwards on that huge plexi-glass map in the Radar scope room so the General could see what was going where. Im not sure I ever mastered that writing backwards. Then in Apr of 1957, was reassigned to Itazuke AB, Japan. Birdie, thanks for teaching me to count to 10 in Japanese. When I departed Japan in Aug 60, it was back to a SAGE Block house at Adair AFS, OR., Portland Air Defense Sector (POADS). Then, due to illness of my wife, I had a humanitarian reassignment to the 703d AC&W Sq, at Texarkana AFS, AR. in Apr 1962. I then departed Texarkana AFS and went to an Engineering Sq at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex (CMC) at Colo Spgs, CO. It was the only organization at CMC at the time. A CWO Hill, a gung-ho type, obtained permission for us to be somewhat of an elitiest group by allowing us to blouse our pants on the boots, and to wear white hardhat helmets as our normal headgear. Then in Jan of 1966, I departed Cheyenne Mountain Complex and went back to Itazuke AB, Japan, Alas, never to be assigned to a Radar unit again. But it was fun while it lasted. *big grin* Hope some old pals see and recognize the name and contact me. I think this is a GREAT web site!!! Good Work guys!!!

Also.. was stationed 71-72 at Monkey Mtn VietNam at a TACC & then at Kindsbach Germany near Ramstein AFB..again as a 276. Again, as an amateur photographer back then, I ended up with a ton of pics from both places. Nice to see some webpages popping up that are devoted to past & current AirForce members/bases and afscs. Fantastic new look!! Gene & Tom, you guys have created something here that you can be justifiably proud of. Im extremely glad to see that we who spent so many years in the background, keeping the radars turning, the comm gear running and the aircraft controlled are now getting some recognition, (even if we have to do it ourselves!). Even though we werent the ones to fly the fancy aircraft and got little or no acknowledgement for our labours, WE WERE THERE AND WE MADE A DIFFERENCE AND THEY COULDNT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT US !!

As Genes partner in this endeavor, I would like to personally thank each and every contributor and guestbook signee for taking the time and effort to help make this web site possible! I would also like to publicly thank Gene himself for taking so much of his personal time and resources to put this web site together! It is very gratifying to see so many people take an interest in the USAF Cold-War air-defense radar programs. The many contributions -- photographs, squadron emblems, site bochures, maps, personal anecdotes -- are invaluable! Thank you one and all for placing your trust in us with your personal memorabilia. For those of you having similar material to contribute, please do so. We want to make the on-line collection as complete as possible. 1998 marked a great beginning -- lets make 1999 even better. Again, thank you everyone for all of your contributions and assistance! Take care! -- Tom
