(Spotted by Ron Plante) For Sale: Former Stanley Mickelsen SAFEGUARD missile-defense site -- see https://extportal.pbs.gsa.gov/ResourceCenter/PRHomePage/loadProperty.do?propId=2174. The property includes a Missile Site Radar (MSR) site and 4 Remote Sprint Launch (RSL) sites. What a deal!

I, too, owe my career to the AF and 303X2 training. The old saying was------if you can work on a radar, you can work on anything. I found that to almost be true.

I join'd the AF in 64, spent 14 mos at KAFB, MS became a 303x2, first site, North Bend Oregon, left there in 67 went to the 623 Kume, Okinawa for a year, then on to Minot AFS, ND. Left the AF in Sept of 71. I am still a farm boy from KY, that owes the AF for the training on radar and computers (some built by Raytheon) who by the way employed me for the next 25 years. Now who should I thank?

Billy, messhall row conjures up bad memories. In 1951 schools were 3 shift, 6 days a week and KP lasted from 5 am to about 2 am the following day, feeding 4 meals. Beside class KP, Sunday KP rotated around the Sqdns. Made corporal (only top 10% of class made it then) exempting me from it. Then new rank system, now I'm an A/2c and back on KP. We even pulled mess server duty at the NCO mess hall. Lasting memories of marching everywhere, watching the back of the shirt of the guy in front of you darker with sweat. Offered instructor, but happy to leave.

Driving by Parks AFB the other week, noticed they still have some of the old WW2 2 story wood barracks. Lived in them at Sampson, Keesler and McClellan (splinter city) and the latter was quite a change from the new two man room I lived in on Mt Tam. That was back when you ate your SOS off of metal trays. Probably not many of the old barracks remain, maybe should make sure one is preserved.
