I was at the 644th Radar Sqdn ( Richmond AFS ) from 1965 to 1968 . I've seen Walt Martley on the site and would love to hear from some other guys . Rocky Carroll lives in Las Vegas but I haven't talked to him in a long time . We were both on the T-2 . Some names I remember are ; Jerry Gershon ( from basic electronics at Keesler ) , Vaughn Glenn from NYC , Robby Robertson from Long Island , Alan ????? from NYC , Airman Askey from NC or SC . Airman Clackum ( deceased ) .

If you are on Facebook, search for your old unit or squadron. Chances are you will find it, but if not, start your own! For example, Fortuna AFS is there. Find people there you may know!

Am an old scope dope, emphsis on dope. Never asked, never concerned then, but am now - What provided the power to create an electromagnetic field to send out a signal from the radar? Is there an easy explanation as to how mechanical energy was converted to electromagnetic energy? Did each radar site have its own frequency on the radar that was emitted? How was a frequency dialed into the radar? Just curious after all these years. Is there a simple book to exlpain all this? RT 789 AC&W Omaha, 1958-1960.

From AF Magazine: Star Rising in the West: After seven years of painstaking restoration, the world's only airworthy EC-121T Warning Star took to the skies, lifting off on a ferry flight from Camarillo Airport northwest of Los Angeles to its new home, the Yanks Air Museum in Chino, east of Los Angeles, for permanent display. Museum officials said the 57-year-old aircraft performed well during the 90-minute flight on Jan. 14. Derived from Lockheed's Constellation airliner, this EC-121 arrived in August 1955 at McClellan Air Force Base, near Sacramento, where it joined the 552nd Airborne Early Warning Wing, according to the museum. Deployed to Iceland, South Korea, and Taiwan, the aircraft monitored air and missile threats throughout the Cold War under Air Defense Command. It was reassigned to the Air Force Reserve in 1976, before retiring in 1978. The museum acquired it in 2004.

About radars at 689th AC&W, Mt. Hebo AFS, Oregon - AN/GPS-3 was only at Portland, Oregon, in early 689th AC&W 1955-56 days before station was built on Mt. Hebo. I was assigned to team upgrading AN/FPS-6 to AN/FPS-6B in 1958. Please see USAF-RSV-WORLDWIDE Mt. Hebo album "Mt. Hebo-Last Sunset" photo comments. I served at Mt.Hebo AFS in 1957-1958 in Radar Maintenance. Your site roster has led me to communicate with one with whom I served in USAF. This is a good site.

If you collect patches, there is one on e-bay right now at a very reasonable cost. It is for the 641st AC&W Squadron, Labrador. These patches are getting harder and harder to obtain. I have no affiliation with this offer on e-bay.

The EC-121T made a flawless takeoff from the Camarillo airport, circled overhead a few times gaining altitude and then heading for a high desert route over to the Air Museum at Chino. A slight delay occurred to chase Wiley Coyote off the runway. The last TO that I observed was back in 1955 and I guess I was mentally aboard this flight remembering my Radar Tech duties.

Last flight of the AEW super connies. The EC-121T parked at the Camarillo airport has been certified flyable by the FAA and has received approval for a onetime flight to the Chino Air Museum to be placed on permanent static display there. This aircraft arrived at McClellan in Aug 1955 as a RC-121D. In Vietnam it was credited in directing the intercept and kill of a Mig. On Sat, Jan 14 at high noon it's scheduled for took off. I plan to to be there for this last t/o and flight and revive memories of my flights back in 1954 and 1955.

I'm visiting your site because those of us in the 66th Fighter Interceptor Squadron relied on you in Alaska during the Cold War, for me especially 1954-1956. You did a great job guiding us in our F-94Bs and F-89Ds to unidentified bogies and practice targets and bush pilots without flight plans and sometimes flocks of geese ! Well done every time !

Hi
I am the curator of the Ajo Historical Society's museum here in Ajo, Arizona.
A few days ago two visitors brought in an old identification bracelet that they had found near the 612th Ajo Radar Squadron which was in existence from 1958 - 1970. It had the name Stanley Brown and his ASN number 16385668 and the name "Orpha" on the inside. I made the connection after the visitors had left that there was a SSgt Stanley
Brown stationed at the radar site from 1958 to 1962 and that it might be his.
Please if the Stanley Brown that I believe is associated with this site will you convey the news. The men did not sign our guest book but they said they would return. They hope to return the bracelet.
Sincerely Louie Walters

You can vote on whether or not the old AN/FPS-24 search radar tower at the former Almaden AFS, CA (Z-96) will stay or be torn down. So far it's 82% to keep the tower, and 18% to tear it down.

To vote, go to http://forums.mercurynews.com/poll/should-radar-tower-stay-or-be-razed-when-umunhum-becomes-public-parkland.

Please vote "keep it." Thank you!

Back in the 1983/1984 time frame, the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment (SAGE) System was replaced by the Joint Surveillance System (JSS).

Now I hear that the term "JSS" is being replaced by the term "NDH" which stands National Airspace System (NAS) Defense Program.
