History of Mather AFB, CA

This site began as a Lashup site, L-37, operating an AN/CPS-6 radar in June 1950. In Oct 1951, the Lashup facility was replaced by the Permanent site, P-58. The site was operated by the 668th AC&W Squadron. The squadron operated the AN/CPS-6 radar throughout the decade until a conversion to AN/FPS-20A and AN/FPS-6 and AN/FPS-6B radars was initiated. By 1960 this site was a joint-use facility, handling air traffic control for the FAA. During the following year, the site began providing data for the SAGE system. An AN/FPS-27 FD search radar was planned, but was subsequently cancelled. Also in 1961 the two height-finder radars were removed. In September 1961 the 668th was deactivated and the radar came under FAA control. The site became an operating location for Mill Valley AFS (Z-38), as Detachment 2, 666th Radar Squadron (SAGE). The Air Force terminated use of the site 1 Sep 1966.
