On 21 Jun 03, I went to the area behind Topsham Air Force Station in an attempt to locate the old GATR Site for the 654 RADRON, Hq 35th Air Defense Sector and Hq 36th Air Defense Sector. Topsham Air Force Station was Hq for 36th Air Defense Sector was went into housekeeping status in 1968, was turned over to Brunswick Naval Air Station around 1970 0r 1971. Only a few buildings are left at Topsham AFS from the original ones. I think the old supply warehouse is now the commissary, Base Hq building is now U S Army and U S Marine Reserves, Base fire department is still the fire dept and some of the Civil Engineer Buildings are still around.

The road from the old Topsham Air Force Base as seen from the area where the GATR Transmitter Site was.

The gate leading into the transmitter site.

The area where the transmitter building was along with the antenna field.

Looking thru the gate where the GATR Receiver Site was.

Another photo of the receiver site.

The road as seen at the crest of the hill by the receiver site looking back towards the transmitter site. You can still see the "yellow line" in the center of the roadway

These last two photos are of the State of Maine Forest Service Fire Tower located on the southwest corner of the transmitter site. Fire tower is also inactive, has been for some time. I have attempted to gain access to this area in the past, but found I was taking the incorrect road as I was attempting to gain access via the base housing area at the Navy Brunswick Annex for the old air force housing which is now navy housing. Found I could gain access to the area via a road that leads to a new cell tower located next to the fire tower.
