Recent Photos of Snow Mountain AFS, KY

Only one building still stands at the tech site, that being the GATR site. A water tank and presumably a pump house are seen in the cantonment area; those might be original structures, too (?). Except for the AF Station road, that`s about all that`s left.

The former Snow Mountain AFS is located a few miles west of Fort Knox, south of US Rte 60. Little remains of this former long-range radar station. The only building remaining is the Air Force GATR facility which is located on the north-northeast corner of the mountain. The Army has several temporary shelters set up on the mountain top as well as alongside the access road.

This photo shows the old GATR building. The building appeared to be in good condition. [looking northeast]

This photo also shows the old GATR building, but from the other side. [looking north]

This photo shows the stretch of road at the mountain top that runs southwest past the GATR site towards the old radar / operations area just beyond the trees in the photo`s center. [looking southwest]

This photo shows the area roughly where the LRR operations building and probably one radar tower (maybe the height-finder radar tower) once stood. Nothing remains of the technical site except some rubble and the roads. [looking northeast]

This final photo shows the area to the south. The nearby area to the left is believed to be where the search radar tower once stood. [looking south]
