Recent Photos of Carmi AFS, IL

May, 2003 photos by Tom Page

The short-lived Carmi AFS is located east of town, just past the airport. This station was operated as a "manned gap filler" until unmanned gap-filler radar equipment became available. However, the site reportedly was not converted. It closed altogether in 1957. Today, most of the buildings appear to be either vacant or used for storage. The old dining hall now houses the Trelleborg YSH Industries Mold & Tool Division.
