Taken looking Northeast from Adams country hwy B, just before starting up the hill to where the access road to the site is. I surprised myself, the last time I had been there was in 1966, was able to drive right to the site though. When we were TDY at the gapfiller we stayed at a motel in Adams,WI so went to Adams and took the route that we had taken all those years ago. The Road letters came back to me as I drove and I was soon approaching the site from the North. The site was not visable from the North because of the woods and I wasn`t sure just where the access road was or if would still be there didn`t see it in time to turn in so went on by, down the hill and turned around, thats when I took this picture.

This one is looking West from the top of the access road into the Site. Everything very recongnizeable. Although naturally deteriorated it doesn`t look all that bad, considering it hasn`t been maintained for 30 years. I could almost hear the fans running as I moved closer.

Still looking West and a little North from the top of the access road. Thats the Out house on the Right, it is still in pretty good shape too although someone has run away with the door.

From the last shot, I just turned a little to the Left. In this veiw, if the grass had been mowed, it could have been an operational Gap Filler. Of course the picture doesn`t show everything.

There is a chain and padlock on the gate, although I didn`t get them in this shot. The mesh is gone from the gate on the left so you can just walk through, which I did. This shot is pretty self explanitory.

Now I don`t think you can get a better shot of a Gap Filler Antenna Tower taken in 1999 then this one.

Here we are at the front door of P-19C , there is some graffiti on the right side of the door , didn`t want to get that in the picture, would like to find out who did it though. I was surprised that everything looked as good as it did. Could really hear those fans running from here. The back fence is knocked down and there has been other vandalism.

The entrance to the power room. As you can see there is a piece of 6 inch channel iron welded accross the door the same as the door to the radar equipment. The commercial power at P-19C was really bad, in the summer we had a very bad problem with squirrels getting burned off transformers, and farmers irrigations pumps starting and stopping. There were power failures or fluctuations bad enough to switch to diesel power many times a day. I don`t recall what the record was but there were a lot of them, we put recorders on the line to keep track. For some time we ran this site on diesel power, with ONE diesel generator for months and it never missed a lick. I did not maintain this site regularly but was familiar with what happened there. During the summer the crew that maintained 19C would switch to commercial power long enough to do the PMs in the power room and then switch back to the diesel. P-19C was a high maintenance site because of the power situation.

Here I am on my way out, there was no place to put the car out of the way. It was about this time that I really wished I had driven the truck down here. A truck could probably have backed up and out of the way. There is a sort of turn around there, mostly sand, empty beer cans and other stuff.

The access road, from the top. It is really worse then the shot shows.

Going back down the access road. The trees are really closing in, the car got scraped really bad both ways.

Lots of memories.

All the things I have done, different people I have known, Radio, Radar, Computers, there is always a place in my heart for Gap Filler Maintenance.

If that Gap Filler wasn`t up, there was no other shift coming on, no engineers coming in, you had to fix it. Could get some advice on the phone but basicly the two Radar Maintenance men at the site had to figure it out.
