FAA MODIFICATIONS

AS THE MANNED BOMBER THREAT DECLINED THE FAA TOOK OVER MANY OF THE DEACTIVATED RADAR SITES. SOME WERE JOINT USE WHILE OTHER SITES WERE FAAONLY. TO IMPROVE OPERATIONS A SERIES OF MODIFICATIONS WERE IMPLEMENTED. THE RESULTANT RADAR BECAME KNOWN AS THE ARSR-60. THESE MODIFICATIONS INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING:

  1. RF STC WHICH GREATLY IMPROVED MTI PERFORMANCE
  2. A WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE LOG RECEIVER WITH ADAPTIVE FTC
  3. A VIDEO LOG FOR MTI VIDEO
  4. SELECTIVE VIDEO COMBINER (PEAK SELECT OR ADD) FOR DIPLEX OPERATION
  5. A NUMBER OF MISCELLANEOUS CHANGES WHICH IMPROVED OPERATIONS IN AN AUTOMATED ENVIRONMENT

 

JAPANESE MODIFICATIONS

THE JAPANESE MODIFIED A NUMBER OF AN/FPS-20/FPS-20A RADAR SETS TO INCORPORATE THE FOLLOWING:

  1. A LOW NOISE TUNNEL DIODE RF AMPLIFIER
  2. AN AIRBORNE INSTRUMENTS LABORATORIES STANDARD RECEIVING SYSTEM

AFTER MODIFICATIONS, THESE RADARS WERE KNOW AS AN/FPS-20/20A JAPAN

INDIAN AIR FORCE

THE INDIAN AIR FORCE MODIFIED THEIR AN/FPS-100A RADARS WITH THE BENDIX RADAR PROCESSOR BRP-150. THIS PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING:

  1. RF STC
  2. DIGITAL MTI
  3. SOLID STATE RECEIVING SYSTEM
  4. WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE LINEAR RECEIVER (LINAR)

THAI AIR FORCE

THE THAI AIR FORCE MODIFIED THEIR AN/FPS-100A RADARS WITH THE BENDIX BRP-150A. THIS MODIFICATION WAS AN UPGRADED VERSION OF THE BRP-150.

U.S. NAVY

THE US NAVY MODIFIED TWO AN/FPS-20A RADARS WITH THE BRP-150A

NOMENCLATURE CHANGES

THE US AIR FORCE DECIDED TO CHANGE ALL FPS-20 RADAR FAMILY NOMENCLATURETO AN/FPS-20(A..T). NO DOCUMENTATION WAS CHANGED. THOSE WORKING WITH THE RADARS IDENTIFIED THEM BY THE TECHNICAL ORDERS WHICH WERE NEVER CHANGED.
