Highlands AFS, NJ Comparisons

The four enclosed images nicely show the evolution of Highlands AFS from an early Air-Force-only AC&W radar station to a joint-use Air Force (SAGE) / Army (Missile Master) radar station to an Army-only AADCP to a closed facility. All of the buildings and structures seen are no longer extant today.

The 1957 image shows the site as Air-Force-only with the AN/CPS-6b search radar (with radome) and one height-finder radar (temperate tower), either an AN/FPS-4 or an AN/FPS-6 (not sure which).

The 1963 image shows the site after the Army`s Nike Missile-Master blockhouse was added. By this time, the AN/CPS-6b search radar had been replaced by the AN/FPS-7 search radar, several AN/FPS-6 height-finder radars had been added (four had been added -- 2 for USAF and 2 for Army -- but only two can be discerned -- maybe two had been removed already?), and the AN/FPS-26 height-finder radar had been added.

The 1970 image shows the site as Army-only with only the AN/FPS-7 search radar in operation.

The 1979 image shows the site after deactivation but with most of the buildings and structures still standing.
