US Forest Service - Mt. Hebo AFS Recognition Ceremony

The Siuslaw National Forest will be unveiling the newly developed Mt. Hebo AFS interpretive panel on August 8th at Mt. Hebo. The forest plans to recognize those servicemen that were stationed at Mt. Hebo AFS, and the important national security mission that they fulfilled.

As a former member of the 689th Radar Squadron I appreciate this recognition by the Forest Service. I have been back to Mt Hebo and saw the empty and quiet radar station in 1982, and then in 2010 at a reunion when only empty spaces remained. Better this end than rusted metal and debris. This panel will help fill the void for those of us who were stationed there, but where nothing now remains.

The Forest Service is expected to locate the interpretive panel on the mountain and nearby the main operating location of Mt Hebo AFS. This panel includes a narrative about the radar station, a timeline of major events, and photos to include the FPS-24 search radar tower with its huge radome and the much smaller FPS-90 height finder radar and radome.

The Forest Service has also indicated that depending on how many people plan on attending, they could also reserve a van(s) to shuttle folks from the Hebo Ranger Station to Mt. Hebo. There will be a press release developed in the next month or so that he will also send along.

I was stationed at Highlands NJ in 1968. I was on the FUIF maintenance team. I was transferred to the Lumberton base to work on the maintenance team in late 68. In 69 I was transferred to Orangeburg NY and was the team leader until I got out in Sept 70. I enjoy looking at your site and. I may have a couple photos of the Highlands barracks. If I can find them I will contact you.
