Hi,

I served with 681st AC&W squadron at Cut Bank, MOntana, in 1953-54, where I was a scopedope on "Baker" crew with Ron Slusser as crew chief. ALso was with Det. 3 of 610th ACWRON at Shigano-Shima, Japan, as a scope dope (also on Baker Crew) in 1955, and when they discovered I could type I became "Hammerin' Hank Cavanaugh's Ops Clerk at Itazuke Annex in 1956. Cavanaugh was the 610t's Ops Officer. Is there anybody out there who remembers?

Hi All: I've been editing the site rosters again lately and have
found a few items which need completed or corrected? Those of you
who have 'open' tour dates on your final site shown [examples=02-
TBA, or 76-?], pls msg me with your terminal or ret. date--tnx.
Also, if you positively know of the death of someone, pls let me
know...You can also enter a 'new' or 'revised' entry for yourself
or a passed friend--if his/her family still wishes to be contacted
[and you know the correct email], pls advise...Finally, if you spot
errorz [names, AFSCs, tourdates, emails, etc.], pls advise...Thanks!

I believe what used to be the 932nd AC&W squadron (later the 932ACS) has to be in the running for one of the last AC&W squadrons to go out of existence. It went off the air in July of 2006. All the radar sites in Iceland are now under Icelandic civilian control. The 932nd also has to be in the running for the longest continuously active squadron performing AC&W-type duties. It went on the air in the early 1950s and was active for over 50 years. I proudly served there in the early 1960s.

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before (must have been before me, though), but does anyone know when and where the last true AC&W site was turned off and/or turned over to someone else? And, maybe what sets were there. I just started thinking about this today and knew someone on this forum would know. Tnx. Radar Maintenance 1961-65, FPS-20A and FPS-6.

Interesting Smithsonian Air & Space magazine article on computer flight simulators and air traffic control simulators. I was unaware that that was a hobby. Made me wonder about someone coming up with vintage SAGE displays.

I have some more FREE two-night stay hotel vouchers for a hotel-casino in Laughlin, Nevada. There are no strings attached to the vouchers other than they can't be used on weekends and holidays. They are good until December 28, 2009. I gain nothing from this offer other than the satisfaction of giving fellow vets a break. If you would like one (or more) of these vouchers, e-mail me your mailing address and I'll send them out.

HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF A SECRET BASE OR RADAR SITE AROUND DULCE NM?
I'VE BEEN ASKED ABOUT IT A FEW TIMES SINCE I WAS AT THE 767TH AT TIERRA AMARILLA NM IN 54-55-56. THANKS BILL

Bill Wells, I would venture a guess that the "secret" radar station "around" Dulce, NM, was none other than El Vado / Tierra Amarilla AFS itself. Air Force historical records show no other radar facility anywhere in the vicinity.

For you ex-778th AC&W / Radar Squadron alumni, plus others who might be interested, the former Havre AFS (more-recently the Anchor Academy) is still for sale, and the asking price has dropped from $599.000 to $399,000. See http://www.loopnet.com/property/15505288/HC-30-Box-100/ for more information.

Gary, John: Dang it! You've discovered our secret affiliation! No one was supposed to know about Integratron, as well as our secret UFO bases at Montauk and also up on Mt. Lemmon where we used to track missiles using our equipment from Heathkit, Tandy Leather and Radio Shack. I guess we didn't cover our tracks well enough. Back to the drawing board!! ;-))

Seriously, have a restful and safe Labor Day! -- T.

Here is an interesting site for those who are trying to find data sheets on old electron tubes. http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/vs.html Use only the basic tube type number like 5R4 not 5R4WA.

I checked out the integratron website. What a hoot!!!! I almost expected to see reports of Elvis sightings along with all the other comments. I'm not disparaging any vets or other people that live in California (I have relatives there), but when I saw where the integratron was located, I was not surprised. Is there something in the water out there that attracts all these loopy characters and their ideas? I was once stationed with a vet from California and he told me this: California is like a bowl of cereal, take away the fruits and nuts, and all you have left are the flakes.

My Dad wore a hearing aid supplied by the Veteran's Administration. Periodically they sent him fresh batteries for it. My Dad recently passed away and I found this supply of (58) new size 13 hearing aid batteries stashed away. If you know of any vet or other person who could use these hearing aid batteries, send me an e-mail with their mailing address and I'll send them out free of charge. Uncle Sam paid for them, there is no use letting them go to waste.

I have a Radomes decal on my car window. A guy asked me if it was the Integratron? This sounded vaguely electronic but I said no. But, it was an opening to launch into all the boring "there I was" radar stories. Later I looked up "integratron," and I can see how people might think it looks like the Radomes logo. I leave it to you to shake your head in wonder. Here's link.

Caveat emptor. We have learned that many squadron patches available on eBay (and elsewhere on line) are replicas and not originals ... in case that matters to would-be buyers. Some might be originals, but not all. So, let the buyer beware.

RE Heathkit, again.

I seem to remember a connection between Heathkit, Tandy Leather and Radio Shack.
