Photos from Staumnes, IC - c. 1957

Photos & notes contributed by Bill Boulineau

This photo was taken immediately after the storm in Feb 57. It shows an upside down trailer, and the building in front of the Radar tower. There was never any Radar installed while I was there, I left in Sep 57.

This was taken before the storm, but it just shows a lot of snow. At Top Camp.

This was taken in the summer of `57, just shows a lot of rocks. All the buildings were still under construction, only a few of the barracks, dining hall, and motor pool were completed.

This was the damage done to one of the tunnels by empty barrels blowing during the storm. This is Top Camp, by the motor pool.

Top Camp, before the storm.

This is damage done to the roof of one of the buildings. The concrete slab missing weighs about 200#.

This is the barge we unloaded oil from the boats with. All barrels were hauled by truck to Top Camp. I drove a 21/2 ton truck for a 9 months. I`m a 303x2! We could get 400 barrels on the barge.

We originally had two barges, one was broken in half in `56 during the storm that put this barge 30 feet above high tide. It took a month to re-float it.

Base Camp. Some of the guys hauling garbage to the dump. The guy at the rear of the sled is an Icelandic civilian employee, the others are G.I.`s.

This is a photo of our home-built radio station. We could only play records, no mike! It was a signal generator used in Radio Maint. and a turn table, and about 100` of coax. Range-200`.
