Findings Of Fact on Zapata AFS TM-189, based on Information taken from FUDS (Formerly Used defense Site) Report K06TX0645 dated June 1992/3

Site Name

Zapata Air Force Station

Site Location

App. 2 miles north of the town of Zapata, in Zapata County, and 49 miles south of Laredo, TX, on Highway 83.

Site History and Findings of Fact

DOD acquired about 100 acres of property from 1955 to 1958, where the Air Force constructed and operated Zapata Air Force Station. It was active until 1960 when it was deactivated, declared excess, and conveyed to GSA. GSA sold the base on September 27 1961 but reacquired it in 1966 due to a surveying error which had resulted part of the base being constructed on property other than the land that was acquired. Final disposition of the corrected property took place during 1968 when it was sold to private ownership and the County of Zapata.

Current Use of Site at time of FUDS Report

Known as Laspalmas RV Park. After being sold, part of the base was divided into small lots and sold individually to private owners, who drive mobile trailers or campers to the lots and remain there through the winter months. The remainder of the site is vacant. It has reverted to, and is owned by, the county of Zapata.
