Findings of Fact on Sheyenne Gap Filler Annex Z29A These facts are based on the FUDS Report B08ND0410 dated May 28, 1987

The Sheyenne Gap Filler Annex is located in Wells County,14 miles west of Sheyenne, ND. The site is just south of a farmstead 3 miles south and 2 miles east of the town of Bremen, and owned by a Mr. Louis Hitz.

The facility was established for use as an aircraft control and warning station utilizing an FPS-14 short range gap filler radar. It began manual operation on November 1957 and started SAGE operation in 1959. 785th Air Control & Warning Squadron personnel from Finley AFS maintained the radar, which ceased operation between December 1967 and June 1968.

The Ops area consisted of a guard station, 5,000 gal underground diesel storage tank, a tower for the radar dome, a 1255 sq ft concrete block building, security fence, gravel road, sidewalk, and an underground electrical distribution line. The Air Force was not to remove any installed property since the Environmental Science Administration, Dept. of Commerce, was interested in acquiring the installation, but the property was conveyed by quitclaim deed to a private party in 1970. Fence, heating fuel, and fuel tank were salvaged. The tower is still standing. An addendum to the report states that Mr. Hitz still owned the land, and that the building has been vandalized and only a shell remains. Power lines were removed by the REA.
