"... The radar troops going to or from Santa Rosa Island AFS had to take PT boats from Port Hueneme (Naval Base) to the island, and ... at times it sure was rough and cold!! I went out once when they had a family day and picnic....what a ride! The guys got in about every other weekend for maybe a three day....in like Friday afternoon and left Monday morning. When the Cuban Crisis hit, they didn`t get home for a long time. I lived on the mainland in Port Hueneme.

"Of some of the nonsense slides I have sent are of arrival and going of the PT boats. Yes, you had to be loaded onto the cage and pulled up on the deck. When I saw that, I thought I would not even get on the island, but did brave it. When the guys left the island for another assignment they were put in the cage alone and dunked! About 6 months after my husband got there, they stopped it, as there was bacteria in the water or something, and the guys were getting sick! .... "
