Site History and Findings of Fact

The Air Force obtained exclusive use of 31 acres, including several joint use facilities, from the Port Isabel Auxiliary Naval Air Station (PIANAS) in 1957 and acquired 12.03 fee acres adjacent to PIANAS for use as a 27-unit family housing area in 1960. The Air Force constructed and used family quarters on the 12.03-acre site as well as aircraft control and warning facilities on the 31 acres of PIANAS property. Included were five technical buildings, two administrative, two supply, four support, and three dormitory buildings. The 31-acre site reverted to the Navy on October 4, 1961; the housing area was turned over to the Immigration and Naturalization Service on September 10, 1962.
