Photos 1998 & 2003 - What a difference five-years make

Photos and text contributed by: Tom Page, Radomes Staff

The two photos comprising the enclosed composite image are both looking roughly due east along the main road. It appears that both were taken from near the same spot.

The top photo is one I took in the summer of 1998. At that time, the Operations blockhouse and the search radar tower (and a number of other buildings) were still standing. The Operations blockhouse is hidden by the trees and other foliage, but it stood immediately in front of (west of) the radar tower.

The bottom photo was taken -- we believe -- earlier this year (2003). The light-colored area in the distance and to the right (south) is the rubble from the demolished Operations blockhouse. The search radar tower was torn down even earlier (as evidenced by the 2002 "GlobeXplorer" color aerial image on "MapQuest" that shows the blockhouse but not the radar tower). The two vertical poles faintly seen in the far distance mark the GATR site on the east side of this former AF Station.
