Mt. Lemmon - Aspen Fire, June, 2003

The dome seen on the left side of the photo (which is looking just east of due south) houses the U.S. Army`s tracking radar atop one of the old USAF AN/FPS-6 height-finder radar towers -- the other two USAF radar towers are no longer extant. The large building seen at the bottom-center is the old USAF diesel power plant. One barracks is seen in the upper right, and the motor pool is seen on the far left. I am not sure about the other buildings. It was reported on last night`s local news that much of the UA`s telescope equipment was successfully removed yesterday. There was no mention of the USAF radio facility at the former GATR site just outside the main gate of the former AFS.

As you can see in this photo, yesterday the fire had not reached the old AFS / observatory. However, as I look out my back window this morning, I can see that the entire summit area is now engulfed in very-thick smoke.

Photo from Arizona Daily Star, June 19, 2003, page A8.

The fire, as of Thursday 19 June, had not reached the former Mount Lemmon Air Force Station, Arizona (Z-92). As of tonight`s (20 June 2003, 10:00 PM local news, the fire also still had not reached that location, now the Steward Observatory. However, the fire remains unchecked, so the old radar site is not yet out of peril.

More photos showing just how close the fires came to the former Air Force Station / present-day observatory.

Note the former AN/FPS-6 radar tower on the far right.

No fire is seen in this view -- but this photo offers a nice view of the radar tower, as seen from the front gate area.

Seen is the last remaining radar tower (for one of the two AN/FPS-6 height-finders) with the Army tracking radar still installed. That radar has sinced been removed, and the tower is being readied for a telescope.
