The Airmen are spraying the FPS-24 antenna with deicing fluid during the winter of 64/65. Note the ropes to keep them from being blown off the 85 foot tall FPS-24 building, and the arctic parkas which were standard squadron issue. Radomes #1 and #2 were past history by then and operation of the FPS-24 was halted due to antenna damage caused by the ice buildup. Radome #3 came next in 65.

Radome #3 used a space frame design and a single crane was able to support the construction withoutany spiderweb of supports. This crane (in a folded up configuration) remained inside Radome #3 after it was constructed.

Radome #2 showing the damage caused by a lightning strike in 63 - dark areas near the top are destroyed radome panels. Believe just 7 panels were destroyed, but they were adjacent to each other. This loss of structural integrity was the cause of the radomes collapse during a subsequent wind storm. The 2 other radomes are for the FPS-26 and FPS-90 ( left to right).
