Montauk`s Naval Guns

contributed by William Melber

This was the landward side of the 16" Naval Gun emplacement just east of the FPS-35 tower. At least half of this bunker complex was maintained. The gun opening was walled in and used as the motor pool repair area. This opening was on the north side of the "mound".

"In the ground" observation bunker on the east side of the near cliffs. The entrances to the underground chambers were backfilled, but some enterprising person dug down to the metal doors allowing access to the underground rooms. To the right & left of this picture were small circular "gun pits".

This photo is of the openings or overhangs of the 16" Naval Guns looking west, over the diesel storage tanks. The trees and such grew on the earth mound which covered the tunnels, corridors & storage rooms that ran from one end to the other. This set of bunkers was allowed to deteriorate over time.
