I went through there in Oct 97 and got photos of the ex-USAF facility (now TNANG) and the interceptor alert barns (was told I wasn`t allowed to take photos of the KC-135Es on the ramp...."Sgt, I grew up around KC-135s, believe me, I don`t need pictures of them").

FYI, ADC activated the 469th FIS at McGhee Tyson on 1 December 1952, equipped with F-47Ds and Ns, for the protection of the Oak Ridge complex. The 516th Air Defense Group activated at the field on 16 Feb 53 and gained the 460th FIS on 18 March 1954, equipped with F-86Ds (the 469th transitioned from F-47s to F-86As to F-86Ds).

On 18 August 1955, under Project Arrow, the 518th was replaced by the 355th Fighter Group (Air Defense), with the 354th and 469th FIS`s assigned (the 460th designator moved to Portland IAP, OR). The 355th and both squadrons inactivated on 1 December 1957, with the Dog-Sabres going to the newly established 151st FIS/134th FIG at McGhee-Tyson. Notably, the TNANG unit later became one of the first guard squadrons to equip with F-104As in the air defense role.

Interesting base, worth a visit if in the neighborhood. MK
