Original low-500 buildings, 509-524

The buildings 509 through 522 were the 635th`s. 518 and 519 were two-story open bay barracks built during WW II. There were two private rooms on each floor for the barrack`s chief and bay chiefs. When I first arrived at the 635th, in April 1958, I was billeted in 519 and had one of the private rooms on the second floor until moving across the street to 523-I. Building 521 was our mess hall and 520 was the orderly room. I`m not sure about the others.

The buildings numbered 523-G to 523-O were the standard ADC two-story barracks. The "T" shaped building in with them was a mess hall. I was billeted in 523-I on the second floor at the corner closest to the mess hall. It was one of the one-man rooms. I had a million dollar view of Mt. Rainier.

From Ray Bergen January 2003:

I came to McChord and the 635th in May 1958. I was an A/1C (AFSC 27350) and worked in Radar Operations as a Floor Supervisor and Ops B. I was also qualified as a Recovery Director. I left the squadron in the fall of 1959 to go to SAGE school at Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City.

Buildings 509 through 522 belonged to the 635th. 518 and 519 were two-story open bay barracks built during WW II that went well beyond their projected 5-year "temporary" life span. There were two private rooms on each floor for the barracks chief and bay chiefs. When I first arrived at the 635th I was billeted in 519 and had one of the private rooms on the second floor until moving across the street to 523-I. Building 521 was our mess hall and 520 was the orderly room. I`m not sure about the others.

The buildings numbered 523-G to 523-O were the standard ADC style two-story barracks. The "T" shaped building in with them was a mess hall. I was billeted in 523-I on the second floor at the corner closest to the mess hall. It was one of the one-man rooms. I had a million dollar view of Mt. Rainier that I just loved to wake up to in the morning.
