Lyndonville AFS, North Concord, VT

Notes by Bob DeVarney

The Lyndonville AFS site was located on a mountain top about 6 miles east of East Haven, VT, off VT Rte 114. Lyndonville is situated at around 3850` elevation, so access for the winter is by snowmobile. The housing area was right at the turn-off, while the catonment and operations areas were up on the mountain.

A local author, Archer Mayor has written a detective novel in which part of the action takes place there. The book is called "The Disposable Man" and is quite a good book if you like detective novels (I do).

The "Historical Record of the 911th Radar Squadron" for the period ending 31 March 1963 lists the following equipment:

AN/FPS-6A (one)

AN/MPS-11 (one)

AN/MPS-14 (one)

AN/FST-2B (one)

AN/GRT-3 (twenty-six)

AN/GRR-7 (twenty-six)

AN/GRC-27 (one)

AN/GKA-5 (one)

[Editor's note:  AN/FPS-26 (one) was added in early 1963]

Also, I have the personnel list from that period.. 7 officers assigned, 1 attached, 166 airmen asigned, 13 attached, 6 civilians assigned, 4 attached.

Apparently, there is even reference to the base in a book about the "Hells Angels"; apparently it was used to "dispose of" an angel gone bad. It has quite a reputation among the State Police in the area.
