Diesel Generators

Contributed by Vince Burolla

Here`s some generator trivia. The diesels were rated at 1,000 KW each and we had three of them. Our total station load was about 700 KW so we only used two of them when bringing the system on line, then eventually dropping one of the off line. They were made by GM and were normally used in railroad diesel locomotives. Supercharged, the diesels lumbered along at only 720 rpm and produced 4,160 Volts of electricity. Fuel consumption was about 42 gallons per hour.
