I wrote to the Bureau of Land Management inquiring on the actual location of Lewistown AFS, and received the following description:

The radar dome was located a couple miles north of Maiden on Judith Peak, around 23 – 24 road miles northeast of Lewistown. GATR was located on Red Mountain, approximately one mile east-northeast of Judith Peak.  All Air Force buildings have been removed and Judith Peak is now used as a communications site.  It is also considered a prime site for viewing the surrounding countryside.

Driving directions to the site from Lewistown are:

Take Highway 191 north from Lewistown approximately ten miles, turning right on Maiden Road.  A collection of houses and barracks about 6.5 miles up Maiden Road comprise what remains of the Air Force officer’s and enlisted men’s housing.  Another two miles or so brings you to the ghost town of Maiden; continue on the main road, keeping to the left and uphill for about 3.5 to 4 miles where you come to a ‘Y’.  Take the road to the left and you go to Judith Peak; continue on another .75 miles or so, and the road on the right takes you about one mile to Red Mountain.

Bill Reynolds, Bendix tech-rep at Lewistown in 63 – 64, confirmed the location, as he was at Lewistown this last summer. He drove out to the lower site, now privately owned, and saw a horse staked out on the grass in front of the old barracks. He didn’t go up to the top, but was informed that it is indeed a tourist area for sightseeing.
