Paulina Peak Trivia

·         Paulina Peak, Paulina Creek, Paulina Lake, and North Paulina Peak are a few of the many features in Central Oregon named for an Indian, Chief Paulina. Chief Paulina was blamed for the deaths of many miners, trappers, and settlers during 1866 and 1867. After raiding several ranches in the John Day country he was pursued by a group of ranchers and shot by Howard Maupin (town of Maupin named for him).

·         A fire lookout was built on Paulina Peak for the first time in 1915. Replacement towers were built in 1931 and 1964. The last one was destroyed in 1968.

·         The road to Paulina Peak was built in 1958 to allow construction of a U.S. Air Force gap filler radar station (part of the D.E.W. Line system). The installation only lasted one or two winters due to the heavy buildup of rime ice on the tower and violent winds which destroyed the tower which was never replaced. The cement equipment storage room remained until 1987 when the National Guard removed it as a summer camp project.

·         The view of the Cascades extends from Mt. Adams in Washington to Mt. Shasta in California and no you can not see parts of five states, only three.

·         The word is that the toilet on Paulina Peak is the highest public toilet in Oregon.

Editor’s Note:  This gap-filler radar site, of course, was not part of the DEW Line.
