Demolition of the Jupiter Gap-Filler Annex Building

The old Jupiter gap-filler radar building was demolished some time during or after 1990 following the murder of 14-year-old Rachel Karin Hurley. According to multiple news accounts, on Saturday, 17 March (St. Patrick’s Day) 1990, the teenager had been hanging out with friends at Carlin Park, a popular beachside public park just south of this former air-defense radar building. While waiting for her mother to pick her up, Rachel Hurley reportedly was approached by a man who was believed to be homeless and using the abandoned radar building as shelter. The mother arrived at 3:00 P.M. as earlier agreed upon, but her daughter was not at the arranged meeting place. At 4:00 P.M., when the girl still had not shown up, a search was begun. The girl’s nude body was found later that day, around 8:15 P.M., in a heavily wooded area, having been asphyxiated and sexually assaulted. Despite an intensive investigation, the perpetrator has never been found, and the murder remains unsolved to this day. The old radar building was subsequently torn down to prevent other transients from sheltering there, to help make the public park safer.
