Itasca County, Grand Rapids, MN

Site History and Findings of Fact

31.77 acres were acquired between March 1955 and 1956 (with conflicting dates noted in the report) and developed into the radar station, consisting of 49 major structures, 19 of which were family housing units. The site was declared excess to GSA on 7 January 1964. Several parcels were conveyed to the Department of the Interior, the Grand Rapids School District # 318, and the Bureau of Mines. The 7.22 acres conveyed to the Bureau of Mines in 1967 was returned to GSA and then sold to nineteen private owners for private residences. All structures remain at the site and are well maintained.

At the time of the 1991 report, a parcel of this property was being used for storage by the US Geological Survey, with the remainder of the property being used for day care, storage, school district functions, and food shelf functions by Independent School District # 318 of Grand Rapids. The housing area, located 0.2 miles northwest of the radar site, was acquired by Warranty Deed on September 1959, and consists of 5.07 fee and 2.15 easement acres. At the time of the 1991 report, the area was known as Shermdale Edition, Residential Homes.
