November 1967 - 903rd Radar Sq. Gettysburg South Dakota.

The fellow in front is SSgt "Red" McMann. He was the NCOIC of Personnel. The house in the background was his home in the base housing unit. Red bought this 1929 Model A Coupe from a rancher who had used it for a chicken coupe. We hosed it out by "borrowing" the base fire engine. Red and I worked for weeks to get it running - mail ordering parts from J. C. Whitney. It had no roof, no windshield, no fenders, no seats (we used a five gallon bucket), nor floorboards. Notice we did have a spare. The guy on the running board held the battery in place with one foot. This time we were going out to shoot jackrabbits. Man, it was cold. The running board guy was also the shooter - can`t remember his name.

I was the driver and had just turned 21. Today I own four beautifully restored Model A`s and am the editor of The Restorer magazine, official publication of the Model A Ford Club of America. I`ve had a great time with my Model A`s, but none more than this first experience at the 903rd.
