Benson, NC -
The original Joint Surveillance System (JSS) plans for Fort Fisher AFS, NC, called for the site to be closed, and to be replaced by the FAA long-range radar site at Benson, NC. These plans were later revised (probably because it was realized that Benson was over 100 miles inland, and thus provided very little early-warning coverage). The Benson FAA site, which operates an ARSR-1E radar, is located at latitude 35-30-40.5N and longitude 078-32-56.5W. It may be viewed in satellite imagery at URL:
