Radar Moves to Goldstone

Contributed by Dennis E Schehl

As a Bendix Field Engineer Supervisor, I led a team that removed the radar for overhaul and re-installation at Goldstone, Cal. The Goldstone site is the deep space tracking station outside of Barstow, Cal. The gap filler radar was installed as a range saftey radar to provide a warning if private aircraft had entered the restricted airspace between LA and Vegas. I don`t know if its still being used there.

This was around 1975. Also, this was an FPS-18, the web site indicates FPS-14 (was it originally a -14?).

Even though Bendix built this radar we had a hard time getting parts in 1975. The local fisherman were not to happy when we removed the tower, because they used the tower red clearance light as a landmark to get to port.
