Findings of Fact, Site Location, and Information on Dallas Center AFS M-122, based on information provided by US Army Corps of Engineers Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) document B07IA0620 of 1990

Site Location

The former Dallas center Air Force Station M-122 was located 4 miles NE of Dallas Center, Dallas County, Iowa

Site History and Findings of Fact

The site, also known in 1958 as the Dallas Center Gap Filler Annex 81A, consisted of a total of 38.92 acres fee by purchase and condemnation and no-area license by donation made between March 1954 and November 1956.

On March 1, 1956, the 20th Air Division Defense, headquartered at Richards-Gebaur AFB, MO, acquired the 650th AC&W squadron at Dallas Center, Iowa. The former site became operational on May 23, 1956 and was designated as a surveillance station with no limitations on its area of responsibility. Improvements at the site consisted of:

Radar station; traffic check house; power building; mess hall; administration building; two supply buildings; 65-man airmen`s barracks; base auto shop; water storage and pump house; above and underground storage tanks; sanitary sewer system; streets, drives, sidewalks, and parking areas.

Gap Filler Annex

The Air Defense Command Installation reassigned 0.69 acre fee of the manned radar station for an unmanned Dallas Center Gap Filler Annex P-81A, effective August 1 1959. This also included road and utility easement over the 3.15 acres with Waverly Air Force Station being the primary installation.

Deactivation and Excessing of Property

No records are available of when the Air Force disposed of the Gap Filler Annex, but GSA reported excess 38.23 acres fee on October 30, 1959, and then quitclaimed it to a private party on March 7, 1961, reserving road and utility line easement to the 3.15 acres. Relatives of the private party still own the 38.92 acres, which include the site and access, on which the manned radar station was located.

In 1988, the owners stated only two structures remain and all the above ground storage tanks have been removed.
