AIR FORCE ANNOUNCES NEW NAME FOR AREA RADAR SET-UP

Effective Sept. 1, 1960, the 822^nd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron is redesignated as 822^nd Radar Squadron. The change in name comes from under a change in the unit mission under the SAGE concept.

The name change is actually the final step in conversion from a manual AC&W Squadron to Automatic Radar Squadron. All information that is collected by the 822^nd radars is automatically transmitted to Spokane Air Defense Sector (SAFE) at Larson AFB, which becomes operational on August 1, 1960. SAGE is an abbreviated name for Semi-Automatic Ground environment, the latest concept of air defense.
