Radar Center Slated Near Cornwall

New York Times, 1 October 1959, A-20

Washington, Sept 30 (AP) - The Air Force said today that it would built a $15,000,000 underground combat center at White Horse Mountain in New York`s Hudson Valley.

The radar installation will be one of nine to be built by the Air Force throughout the country.

The facility is part of the semi-automatic ground environment system, known as SAGE, and is used to detect the approach of enemy aircraft.

The Air Force said the site near Cornwall was selected because of its proximity to the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. and the industrialized centers of New York and Northern New Jersey.

The Air Force said construction of the installation would not interfere with the water supplies of near-by communities.
