This information is taken from Air Force Pamphlet AFP 34-8-6, INFORMATION ON ALASKA FOR AIR FORCE PERSONNEL AND THEIR FAMILIES, dated 26 October 1964.

714th, AC&W Sq., Cold Bay. The 714th AC&W Sq. is spread among six sites along more than 600 miles of the Aleutian chain and the Alaska peninsula. This farflung squadron operates the Aleutian segment of the Distant Early Warning Line, the "first-to-know" portion of our defense system. Squadron Installations include headquarters at Cold Bay AFS, with detachments at Nikolski, Driftwood Bay, Cape Sarichef, Port Moiler, and Port Heiden. All share the treeless landscape and high winds of the Aleutians, as well as the island`s mild temperatures and excellent fishing.

Squadron members will go from Elmendorf to the main station at Cold Bay for specialized DEW Line training before being assigned permanently to one of the six sites.

Under a minimum manning policy in the squadron, members will find plenty of work to keep them busy.

During off-duty time, salmon and trout will tempt the angler, who can check out equipment from Special Services if he doesn`t have his own. Each site, although small, has a full lineup of hobby shops and recreation rooms, as well as cooperative events with nearby settlements.
