After deactivation by the Air Force, Chehalis Gap Filler Annex RP-1C, located on Crego Hill in Lewis County, was transferred to the Centralia School District in August, 1961 by quit-claim deed via the Dept of Surplus Property Utilization of HEW. It contained the proviso that the school district maintain and use the property for translation of educational TV, and file a report to HEW for a period of 20 years. Ownership of Crego Hill enabled Centralia School District to be the first in the state to offer television as a resource in the classroom.

In August 1981, the school district fulfilled the obligations set forth in the quitclaim deed of August 1961, and was granted full and legal ownership of the Crego Hill site, translator, tower and building. In addition to using the site for transmission of educational television, the school district rents space to both commercial and service units.

The preceding information was taken from the `History` page of the Centralia School District WebPages at www.centralia.wednet.edu .

The October, 1992 DERP-FUDS Report F10WA0265 provides the following additional information, not necessarily in the same format shown in the report:

Site History: The 5.23 acre site was acquired in 1959 and was used by the Department of the Air Force, Air Defense Command between 1959 and 1961 as a gap filler radar station.

Construction on the site occurred in 1959 - 60, and included road access, a main station building, and a 6,000 gallon underground storage tank for fuel. The main station building consisted as a control room and generator room, along with a tower, latrine, underground fuel storage tank and security fencing.

In 1961, the site was reported excess, and on 28 October 1961, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare conveyed the property by quitclaim deed, as described the preceding paragraphs of this status report

The school district has made improvements to the control room and tower to facilitate educational television transmission. The generator room and latrine are not in use. The underground storage tank was removed in 1990. The security fence is still in place and prevents unauthorized entry to the site.
