Calumet AFS, Calumet Michigan (Air Force Compliance/ACC)

Project Overview

- Fiscal Year NWO Began Support: 1988

- Project Size and Complexity: Remediation consists of removal of Asbestos, USTs, Fuel Contaminated Soil and 2 Acre Landfill

- Funds Obligated to Date: $ 3.5 Million

- Future Program: $100,000 in long term monitoring of ground water

- Scheduled Completion of Omaha District Efforts: LTM thru FY01

- Contractors: URS Corporation (AE)

Significant Issues/Challenges

- Customer Expectations: Track natural attenuation of groundwater to assist Air Force in terminating lease of 40 acres and GSA can dispose of additional 40 acres.

- Regulatory Issues: State of Michigan has regulatory authority; no concerns.

- Goals: Close out sites so new owner, Keweenaw County, can make optimum use of property.

- Current issues of concern: Deep groundwater in fractured bedrock is not practical to actively remediate; state has tentatively agreed to natural attentuation with LTM

- Successes to Date: Frequent communications with Keweenaw County helped establish priorities for remediation. Completed remediation on county owned property first, so it could be leased to youth detention facility while LTM continues.

- Items to be elevated to Commander: None
