Memories of the Bridgewater GFA

Larry writes (referring to the recent photo of the Bridgewater GFA, above):

The building looks like it could stand a good cleaning and a new coat of paint. I know if Maj. Williams (my CO) were still around, he`d have it painted if he had to do it himself. He was a very hands on type of person. When the antenna seal let go one time and filled the wave guide and klystron with oil in February, instead of getting a GEEIA team into replace the wave guide and put a new seal in the antenna, he along with the C&E NCOIC and the three of us from the gap filler section did the job. Talk about cold. Wind blowing 40 to 50 knots and temps below zero, we were hanging on to the tower taking the wave guide down. Then we had to cut 6x6 timbers into 4` sections to use as blocking to hold the antenna up while we replaced the seal.

Almost froze to death. But in less than a week, we were back on the air.

Quite a man, Maj. Charles E. Williams, Jr. I`ll have to tell you another story about him and building a parking lot at the receiver bldg. at Caswell AFS. But it`s getting late, so will sign off for now.
