Site History and Findings of Fact

56.39 acres were acquired between April 1956 and July 1961. The Air Force constructed and operated the station, which included 24 structures on a 44.55-acre operations area, a GATR building on 3.31 acres, and a 27-unit family housing area on 8.53 acres. An additional 31.45 acres were obtained for power, water, and telephone line easements.

The mission of the station changed in 1979 when it was transferred to the FAA. All property, except the family housing area, was declared excess to GSA on July 8, 1980 and transferred in 1981 to other agencies for disposal or sold to private ownership. The Operations and GATR sites were conveyed to private parties, with the family housing areas conveyed to the City and the US Coast Guard. The family housing area was disposed of by two separate actions: 6.05 acres were conveyed on July 2, 1980 to HUD who in 1981 conveyed it to the Housing and Redevelopment Authority of Baudette. 2.48 acres were transferred to the US Coast Guard on August 14, 1981.

Remaining buildings at the Air Force Station at the time of the 1992 report included dormitories, mess, radar towers, bowling alley, water storage tanks, gym, vehicle garages, supply, maintenance, and power generation buildings. Condition of the buildings was excellent to poor. A radar tower, bomb shelter, and Officers club are not in service. Most of the structures at the radar and GATR sites have been modified for private use and were in service at the time of the report.
